Coal Hills racers have a strong showing in Victoria

Coal Hills racers bring home the hardware at the Island Nationals in Victoria

Several Coal Hills BMX racers joined hundreds of other racers to compete in the ABA Island National Racing series Fri July 19-21 in Victoria, BC. Top rider of the weekend was Jacob Wiebe who edged out Kelowna rider Colten Stowell to take first in the 14 Intermediate category. Keeping the winning streak in the family, sister Aleasha Wiebe raced to a third place finish in 12 Girls action.

It was Quinn Webber’s day as battled it out on the track. He was on fire during Saturday racing where he took second place garnering him a trophy that was bigger than he was. In Novice 7 action, newcomer Hayden Fieret showed what he was made of. Out of a full 7 rider heat he captured third place during Saturday racing and fourth during Sunday’s race.

In the Expert 7 division, sponsored by Diablos racing, Aidan Webber came out in fifth position on Saturday and raced even harder on Sunday to take third in a very competitive category. In Intermediate 8 action, Cumberland’s Zak Toovey battled it out and placed 7th on Sat. and 6th during Sunday racing.

In the Intermediate 10 division, Coal Hills riders Yuriah Kaska and Dayton Raps both placed in the top finishers. Raps who is a new rider and has moved up very quickly through the ranks, placed 6th on Sat. and 4th on Sun. Kaska placed 7th on Sat. had an even better day of racing on Sun. where he finished up in 3rd place.

Other BMXers who competed include: Zak Fieret, Scott MacDonald, and Ethan Woodland. Overall, Coal Hills had a great showing considering the caliber of competition at this years National Event.

Upcoming Race Information

Work Party :Thank you to everyone who was out this past Saturday to help with the track. We are going to have a work party on Wednesday July 9 at 7 pm. The track could really use your support to get things ready for the big weekend of racing. If you have a weedwacker bring it out and help us clean up the track.

BMX 'ers out in full force Thurs. July 3rd


BMX racers out in full force

Racers were out in full force at the Coal Hills BMX track during Thursday night racing. It was young Sebastien McGrady’s night as he captured first place in the half track competition. Just behind in second was Bill Powsey with Kaden Perkins pedaling his way to a third place finish. In Novice 7 action, it was Michael Eagan who came away with a first place finish edging out newcomer Hayden Fieret. Third place went to Courtenay’s Makalo Mahanaga. Cumberland local Jett Heppell came away with a clean lead in the Intermediate 11 division with Dayton Raps placing second and Aliesha Weibe rounding things out with a third place finish. Weibe is currently ranked third nationally for 11year old girls.

Expert rider Aidan Webber received his yellow jacket which signifies his placement as one of the top 10 riders in the district. He is currently ranked third in Canada in the 7 year old age group.

Racers have a full weekend of racing on this weekend’s schedule which begins on Thursday at 6pm for a regular night of racing. Out of town riders will be heading to Cumberland to heat up the track on Friday July 11 for a double points race, sign up is at 6pm.

On Saturday riders will be racing for a cause. All proceeds from the Race for Life will be donated to Vancouver Children’s Hospital. Last year the Coal Hills track raised $2800 for the Children’s Hospital. Since there is no regular membership fee for this race, it is the perfect race for new riders to try out the sport of BMX. The race starts between 12-1 pm on Saturday. Rounding out this big weekend of racing is the Vancouver Island Challenge Race #3, sign up for this race is between 10-11am.
