Coal Hills racers bring home the hardware at the Island Nationals in Victoria

Several Coal Hills BMX racers joined hundreds of other racers to compete in the ABA Island National Racing series Fri July 19-21 in Victoria, BC. Top rider of the weekend was Jacob Wiebe who edged out Kelowna rider Colten Stowell to take first in the 14 Intermediate category. Keeping the winning streak in the family, sister Aleasha Wiebe raced to a third place finish in 12 Girls action.

It was Quinn Webber’s day as battled it out on the track. He was on fire during Saturday racing where he took second place garnering him a trophy that was bigger than he was. In Novice 7 action, newcomer Hayden Fieret showed what he was made of. Out of a full 7 rider heat he captured third place during Saturday racing and fourth during Sunday’s race.

In the Expert 7 division, sponsored by Diablos racing, Aidan Webber came out in fifth position on Saturday and raced even harder on Sunday to take third in a very competitive category. In Intermediate 8 action, Cumberland’s Zak Toovey battled it out and placed 7th on Sat. and 6th during Sunday racing.

In the Intermediate 10 division, Coal Hills riders Yuriah Kaska and Dayton Raps both placed in the top finishers. Raps who is a new rider and has moved up very quickly through the ranks, placed 6th on Sat. and 4th on Sun. Kaska placed 7th on Sat. had an even better day of racing on Sun. where he finished up in 3rd place.

Other BMXers who competed include: Zak Fieret, Scott MacDonald, and Ethan Woodland. Overall, Coal Hills had a great showing considering the caliber of competition at this years National Event.

BMX racers out in full force

Racers were out in full force at the Coal Hills BMX track during Thursday night racing. It was young Sebastien McGrady’s night as he captured first place in the half track competition. Just behind in second was Bill Powsey with Kaden Perkins pedaling his way to a third place finish. In Novice 7 action, it was Michael Eagan who came away with a first place finish edging out newcomer Hayden Fieret. Third place went to Courtenay’s Makalo Mahanaga. Cumberland local Jett Heppell came away with a clean lead in the Intermediate 11 division with Dayton Raps placing second and Aliesha Weibe rounding things out with a third place finish. Weibe is currently ranked third nationally for 11year old girls.

Expert rider Aidan Webber received his yellow jacket which signifies his placement as one of the top 10 riders in the district. He is currently ranked third in Canada in the 7 year old age group.

Racers have a full weekend of racing on this weekend’s schedule which begins on Thursday at 6pm for a regular night of racing. Out of town riders will be heading to Cumberland to heat up the track on Friday July 11 for a double points race, sign up is at 6pm.

On Saturday riders will be racing for a cause. All proceeds from the Race for Life will be donated to Vancouver Children’s Hospital. Last year the Coal Hills track raised $2800 for the Children’s Hospital. Since there is no regular membership fee for this race, it is the perfect race for new riders to try out the sport of BMX. The race starts between 12-1 pm on Saturday. Rounding out this big weekend of racing is the Vancouver Island Challenge Race #3, sign up for this race is between 10-11am.

The warm weather is finally here and that means BMX season has officially begun. So dust off your bikes and head out to the track in Cumberland to check out BMX action this Saturday. Registration begins at 2:00pm and racing starts at 3:00 pm. Anyone can try out this sport by purchasing a one day membership for $7.00. Racers need to wear a helmet and long pants with a long sleeve shirt.

Spectators are always welcome, and coming out to watch this new Olympic sport is a great way to see if you might be interested in trying it out. The BMX season runs spring through fall and riders can race in as many races as they like at Coal Hills or at other ABA tracks within the province. This is it folks, the last race of the season is drawing close on Saturday Sept. 28. It will be the last chance for new riders to try out the sport with a one day membership. Don't forget the Grand Nationals in Chillowack on Oct. 5-7. If you will be attending the year end banquet, please contact Margaret and let her know how many of you will be attending and what potluck dish you will bring.

Justin will be holding his last clinic on Tues. Oct. 2. from 6-8ish , the cost is $5.00. This is the last chance for new riders to try out the sport with some instruction and some fun learning games.

Coal Hills riders excel at National race

On the heels of the World BMX Championships, the Harbor City Nationals were held in Nanaimo on Aug 3-5. Several Coal Hills riders fared well during the weekend of racing. During Friday night racing, many of the riders came home carrying trophies that were almost as big as they were.

In the Intermediate 6 class, it was Aidan Webber who raced hard and came away with three second place finishes. Serena Smythe picked up a first in the Novice 7 class in Friday night racing. With some tough competition in this class, it was Braydon Nickel who was pleased with his two third place trophies in the Novice 7 division. Zach Toovey, who is only 7 years old had to race up in the Intermediate 8 class. He raced hard and came away with a couple of 5th place finishes. In the Novice 9 class it was Ethan Woodland’s day as he captured three first place trophies over the weekend in the Novice 9 class. The wins over the weekend bring him very close to moving up to the Intermediate class. Emily Toovey, who just started racing did exceptionally well in the sane age class, taking home three third place trophies

It was two local boys battling it out for the top spot in the Intermediate 9 boy’s class. Jett Heppell took home a first place trophy in Friday night racing and two second place trophies over the weekend. Just behind him, it was Yuriah Kaska who managed a second place in Friday night racing and two third place finishes to round out the weekend.

Moving up a class just before a big race can be difficult, but Chris Devito took it all in stride. He gave it his all during his races and brought home a third place finish in Friday night racing. Scott MacDonald also just recently moved up to the Expert 9 class making it a challenging weekend of racing in his new division. Jacob Weibe was in with some tough competitors in the 13 Intermediate class and moved from third place in his final race to first in a matter of seconds as two riders collided on course to knock each other out. Weibe also took another first in a prior race.

Racing runs in the family, as sister Aliesha worked hard for her 3rd place trophy in the girls 10 age class.

Rounding out the weekend racing in the 16 Expert class was Torry Slater who grabbed a second place finish on Fri. and a 4th and 5th place finish on Sat./Sun. In the same class, Justin Mudge put in some good racing over the weekend and came home with a third place trophy in the 16 Expert during Fri. racing.

Overall, it was a great weekend of racing with local riders doing very well in competition.

Local rider Torry Slater ranked top 10 on Vancouver Island

Coal Hills BMX association was pleased to present local 16 year old Torry Slater with the prized ABA yellow jacket which signifies his ranking in the top ten on Vancouver Island. Slater has been racing now for six years.

According to his Mom, he has put in thousands of hours on the track. She added, “ being athletic, he took to the sport right away.” Slater is ranked #3 in BMX nationally in the 16 age class. And in Cruiser class, (which is essentially BMX with 24” tires), he is second in his age class nationally. Recently, Slater injured himself in practice dislocating his collarbone, however he is back racing, and will head to the Nationals in Nanaimo this weekend. Slater who is classed as an expert rider and was picked up by sponsor Diablo Racing just last year. Having a sponsor helps with many of the costs associated with racing at a high level.

When asked about his future, Slater said, I’d like to turn pro and see how far I can go in BMX. At the local track, Slater is already considered a pro to the younger riders, they look up to him as a mentor.

BMX Race for Life raises $2800

The annual Coal Hills Race for Life was held recently with $2800 being raised to date. A local fundraising car wash added $400 to the total which will be given to the cancer department at Vancouver Children’s Hospital.

In racing action, 53 riders both young and old were out in fine form for the weekend’s double point race. In the 10 Intermediate class, Chris White from Nanaimo placed first in all of his mottos, capturing first place overall. Cumberland riders Jett Heppell and Scott Macdonald placed a respective second and third.

Last week’s rider of the week, Chris DeVito heated up the track as he easily topped the 12 Novice division. In the 9 Novice age category, Scott Friesen placed first overall. Tristan Flood battled it out with Ethan Woodland in the final motto. Flood captured second and Woodland finished in third.

This race provided an opportunity for new riders to try out the sport of BMX. There were several Mom’s and Dad’s who decided to take a break from spectating and head out on to the track to try things out. One parent commented, “ it’s a whole lot different when you’re the one out there pedaling.”

BMX racing is growing in BC with a new track just opened in Campbell River, race days are Mondays with a start time of 6pm. Nanaimo will host a three day National race Aug. 3-5. And for world caliber racing check out Victoria July 26-29 where international riders will be vying for a spot to represent their country in the 2010 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Race for Life raises $2800 to date

The Coal Hills crew raised $2800 to date. Riders are encouraged to bring in their donations for the cause. The car wash held by many of the older riders was a huge success, raising over $400.00 to charity. Many thanks to all those who helped out.

On another note, there was a great turnout for Justin Mudge & friends rider clinic. For a mere $5.00, (which Justin is collecting to go back to the track to buy dirt), kids get a great workout, they get lots of individual help on improving technique, they play several learning games, and most importantly, they are out having fun, learning more about the sport of BMX. Way to go Justin, the clinic exceeded my expectations. We will see you out again next Tues. @6pm.

Rider Clinics with Justin Mudge will take place on Tues. evenings at the Coal Hills track. Justin has all kinds on fun games and training tips planned for the evening. The fee is $5.00 with the money going to the track. But, if you ask me, Justin should be keeping at least half of the money for his time. See you at the track! Race for Life

This special event will be taking place this weekend. The weekend starts off with a double points race Friday evening at 6:00pm. Saturday's Race for Life event will draw riders from all over the island. Camping on site will be available. It will be a great family event for all and for a great cause. The $10 entry fee will go towards helping children with cancer at the Vancouver Children's Hospital. Last year the Coal Hills track raised $4200. BMX families are encouraged to bring a new rider (and as many spectators as you can fit into one car) to the track, since there is no membership fee for this race. The race start is 2-3 pm on Sat.

In order to support the fundraising effort, many senior riders are getting together to hold a car wash at the Cumberland General Store Sunday at 10 am. Come out and support their effort by getting your car washed.

Vancouver Island Challenge

The Vancouver Island Challenge Race will begin at 12:30 today. The sign up time is between 11-12pm. If you need to reach the track, you can call 336-2699 and direct any inquiries to Margaret Mudge. Also don't forget about training sessions for new and experienced riders. The sessions will be taking place on Mondays at 6pm and coincide with gate practice at 6:30. There is a cost of $10 which will be donated to the charity race.

Money Donated to Coal Hills/ Rider Clinics

The Sea Roamers Marine Services Ltd. and the Masonic Temple Association each donated $500 to the association to help with repairs to the damage done to the track.

Kevin Robbins is going to be holding riders clinics every Monday evening starting today. The clinic begins at 6 pm and coincides with gates practice. the cost is $10 per clinic. The proceeds from the clinic will help support a great cause, the Race For Life. The clinics will be held each Monday with the last clinic being held on July 9th.
While your kids are in the clinic, we could use parents help getting the track ready for the VIC which will be held on June 30. We need some weed whackers to take down all the long grass along with raking the track and getting rid of all of the rocks. Remember, many hands make for light work.

Coaching Opportunities in BMX

Cycling BC is proud to announce a new initiative to kick-start the development of BMX Coaches in our province. In conjunction with the NCCP/CBET program, Cycling BC is offering to provide the “Introduction to Competition – Part A’ to eight (8) participants at various locations in November and December of 2005. Any applicants who already have “Introduction to Competition – Part A” may apply to take “Part B”. Priority will be given to applicants in the BC01 and BC02 districts where a CCA/Cycling BC track is located.

We are offering the “Part A” course at a reduced fee of $25 (Normal course fee is $105) and “Part B” for $35 (Normal course fee is $125).

The course is the first part of NCCP/CBET LEVEL 1 and is a general sport course rather than sport-specific. Following the completion of the “Introduction to Competition – Part A”, participants will be encouraged to take either the MTB Level 1 Technical or “Introduction to Competition – Part B” course to further compliment their formal coaching education.

We ask that those who apply are serious about working towards a completion of LEVEL 2 by the end of 2006. The Technical portions of BMX are still in development with CCA so we are encouraging participants to take the MTB Technical levels until the BMX courses are available. The CCA has indicated that the BMX technical courses should be available in the spring of 2006.

Description of how to complete LEVEL 1:

1. Complete and pass “Introduction to Competition – Part A”
2. Complete and pass “Mountain Bike Technical Level 1”
3. Complete and pass “Mountain Bike Practical”

Provincial Championship Series Race

Over 100 riders many from Nanaimo and Victoria hit the Coal Hills BMX track in full force vying for double points in race five of the Provincial Championship Series. Empire days helped draw a large crowd of spectators who eagerly cheered on riders aged three to forty.

The races which were held on May 21 hosted several National level riders including Michelle Berti (Nag 4) and Amanda Little (Nag 9), both from Nanaimo. Melissa Faulkner, currently ranked number two in Canada in the 13 year old girl’s expert division came all the way from Grand Forks to compete in this event. She competed with a group of 13 year old experts including several guys her age. She placed second overall, just behind Victoria rider Graham Cronk. Coming in forth was local rider Jacob Weibe.

The 16 year old expert division proved to boast some tough competition, but local rider Torry Slater (who is ranked third Nationally in his age division), emerged in first, with Fraser Rich from Victoria just behind him in second.

In the Novice six division, and new to the sport of BMX, Tyrell Horler from Black Creek edged out Cumberland rider Braydon Nickel to capture the gold medal. Serena Smythe who is the Coal Hills Rider of the Week, took home the bronze medal.

The BMX season is just getting underway, and new riders of any age are encouraged to come out and give this exciting sport a try. Practice times are Mon. at 6:30 and race days are Saturdays until the end of June with races beginning at 3pm.

There will be no racing On Saturday May 19. In conjunction with the May Day event that takes place every year in Cumberland, a double points race will be held on Monday May 21.

The day will begin with interested riders riding together in the May Day parade. Riders should show up at 9:30 am at the United Church in Cumberland to prepare to ride in the parade.

Riders hit the track in the second race of the season

It was a rainy, west coast day, but that did not stop an enthusiastic group of racers from giving it their all at the Cumberland BMX track. Over 35 riders young and old, were out to compete in the second race of the season.

In the half track division, riders as young as 3 pedaled on bikes with training wheels as parents pushed along behind with a helping hand. Although the Coal Hills club has a number of seasoned riders, BMX is a sport for all ages and ability levels. New riders begin at the Novice division and can work their way up to Expert by winning races and gaining points. And, this is not just a sport for boys, several girls were out on Saturday racing and winning, alongside the boys.

In the Novice 6 division, Braydon Nickel captured first place with Tyrell Horler coming in a close second. Serena Smythe crossed the line in third.
The 13 year old Intermediate class saw experienced rider Jacob Wiebe take first, with Douglas Kelly-Waterfield in second, and Aleasha Wiebe in third.

The season has only just begun, there are still opportunities for interested riders to get involved in the sport. The Coal Hills club holds races every Saturday during the spring. Sign-up for the race begins at 2:00 pm, the races begin at 3:00pm. Riders need a bike, helmet, long pants and a long shirt to race. Trial one day memberships are free, race fee is $7.00.
