Local rider Torry Slater ranked top 10 on Vancouver Island
Coal Hills BMX association was pleased to present local 16 year old Torry Slater with the prized ABA yellow jacket which signifies his ranking in the top ten on Vancouver Island. Slater has been racing now for six years.
According to his Mom, he has put in thousands of hours on the track. She added, “ being athletic, he took to the sport right away.” Slater is ranked #3 in BMX nationally in the 16 age class. And in Cruiser class, (which is essentially BMX with 24” tires), he is second in his age class nationally. Recently, Slater injured himself in practice dislocating his collarbone, however he is back racing, and will head to the Nationals in Nanaimo this weekend. Slater who is classed as an expert rider and was picked up by sponsor Diablo Racing just last year. Having a sponsor helps with many of the costs associated with racing at a high level.
When asked about his future, Slater said, I’d like to turn pro and see how far I can go in BMX. At the local track, Slater is already considered a pro to the younger riders, they look up to him as a mentor.
