BC Championship Series Race - Media release



Provincial Championship Series Race

Over 100 riders many from Nanaimo and Victoria hit the Coal Hills BMX track in full force vying for double points in race five of the Provincial Championship Series. Empire days helped draw a large crowd of spectators who eagerly cheered on riders aged three to forty.

The races which were held on May 21 hosted several National level riders including Michelle Berti (Nag 4) and Amanda Little (Nag 9), both from Nanaimo. Melissa Faulkner, currently ranked number two in Canada in the 13 year old girl’s expert division came all the way from Grand Forks to compete in this event. She competed with a group of 13 year old experts including several guys her age. She placed second overall, just behind Victoria rider Graham Cronk. Coming in forth was local rider Jacob Weibe.

The 16 year old expert division proved to boast some tough competition, but local rider Torry Slater (who is ranked third Nationally in his age division), emerged in first, with Fraser Rich from Victoria just behind him in second.

In the Novice six division, and new to the sport of BMX, Tyrell Horler from Black Creek edged out Cumberland rider Braydon Nickel to capture the gold medal. Serena Smythe who is the Coal Hills Rider of the Week, took home the bronze medal.

The BMX season is just getting underway, and new riders of any age are encouraged to come out and give this exciting sport a try. Practice times are Mon. at 6:30 and race days are Saturdays until the end of June with races beginning at 3pm.
